Hi All,

I have finally booked my Freediving course. As most of you aware, my depth is limited so I have decided the best way to push myself is to try and improve my freediving skills (not that I have any to start).

If anyone would like to join me then please find the details below. Please contact Steve directly.

Brett
PREREQUISITES
To enrol in the AIDA ** Freediver course, an individual must:
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Be able to swim at least 200m non stop without fins and at least 300m non stop with mask, fins and snorkel
• Have completed the AIDA Medical Form and be in good health and a good level of fitness
• Have completed the Liability Release

The AIDA 2* course is for those with water confidence to learn the basics about freediving so they can safely dive with or without a line. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the student with the skills, knowledge, planning, organisation, safety procedures, techniques, problems, hazards and enjoyment of breath hold freediving. Students will be introduced
to the basic disciplines of freediving; Static Apnea, Dynamic Apnea and Constant Weight freediving.

The static and dynamic sessions are to be used to teach breathing, relaxation, finning and safety techniques. Once pool requirements are met, in the OW sessions the student will use the skills they have learned in the pool sessions and will combine these with the basic skills of OW freediving such as equalizing, duck diving, vertical swimming, body positioning.

The course is three parts, theory, pool and Open water. We are proposing to run the theory and pool sections over three Wednesday evenings in June. The 13th/20th and 27th. We are looking at doing the course between 5.30pm and 10.00pm over those three days. If we do not complete the requirements I will work with students until hopefully they reach a suitable level. Once we have done this we will organise three open water sessions over a minimum of two days. these will be mutually agreeable dates sometime in July/August depending on availability.

Course costs include handouts, pool fees, equipment rental (although you will be encouraged to purchase your own gear for comfort and for use after the course), it will also include Certification upon successful completion of al requirements. It does not include Open water dive site fees or transportation to dive sites.

Any questions please do not hesitate to contact me, more details here http://www.freedivers.co.uk/resources/courses.asp

See you in the blue

Shark conservation is so hot it’s setting the world on fire. And the battle is on to secure the protections sharks deserve.

Focus your Earth Day activism on sharks and do the ocean a favor. During April’s Big Shark Shout Out, stand with divers worldwide and demand overdue protections from overexploitation: overfishing, finning, and bycatch.

Sign the most important shark petition on the planet (at least we think so)! We’ll carry your voice to those who can make shark protection a reality.

Already signed? Be a petition organizer and visit the Big Shark Shout Out Action Kit to grab all the tools to take a bigger stand for sharks. We’re shooting for 250,000 shark signatures this year and you can help us get there. Give us a shout on Facebook. We want to hear from you!

Get creative and show your passion for sharks on camera in PADI and Project AWARE’s joint “I Heart Sharks” photo contest. Start taking shots now. The contest begins 9 April and deadline to enter is 30 April. There might just be a prize in it for you.

Why Shout for Sharks this April?

Highly sought for their fins, meat, oil, teeth and cartilage, sharks have a high price on their heads. Demand for shark fins, lacking fishery management and virtually non-existing regulations for almost all shark trade are pushing many shark species to the brink of extinction.

The heat is on to give decimated shark populations the protections they deserve. And Project AWARE is targeting the power of one of the world’s largest, most effective wildlife conservation agreements to do it – Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

While CITES has helped to save a myriad of terrestrial species like the African elephant, the effort to add sharks and marine fish to CITES is still relatively new territory, resulting in difficult battles.

But divers are up to the challenge – especially for some of the world’s most vulnerable species such as hammerheads, oceanic whitetip, spiny dogfish, porbeagle sharks, manta and devil rays.

Thank you for shouting for sharks this April and propelling shark conservation in your community and around the globe!

Plastic bags are part of every day life and have been since the 1950′s. They are literally everywhere. Did you know we use around 260 million tons of plastic every year. That is crazy. Unfortunately a lot of this makes its way into the ocean. Around 60 to 80% of marine rubbish is made of plastic. Studies have shown that the highest concentration of “mega and macro plastics” are found in the northern hemisphere. Sadly some plastics can last hundreds and thousands of years, this does not bode well for our ocean and more importantly the marine life.

Hundreds of thousands of turtles, whales, other marine mammals, and millions of seabirds die each year from ocean pollution. Marine debris is manmade waste that is directly or indirectly disposed of in oceans, rivers, and other waterways. Most trash reaches the seas via rivers, and 80% originates from landfills and other urban sources. This waste, which is also consumed by fish and can entangle sharks and damage coral reefs, tends to accumulate in gyres (areas of slow spiralling water and low winds) and along coastlines

There are 5 major ocean gyres worldwide. In the Pacific Ocean, the North Pacific Gyre is home to the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, a large area that is approximately the size of Texas with debris extending 20 feet (6 meters) down into the water
